About us

Sunyata Retreat Centre is nestled into a hill on a beautiful 10-acre property amidst the rolling hills of East Clare in West Ireland. A spacious haven outside the bustle of modern life, Sunyata is perfectly situated for relaxation, meditation, and contemplation. Our main connection is with the Thai forest tradition of Theravada Buddhism and our main practice is mindfulness meditation. The word 'Sunyata' is from the ancient Pali and Sanskrit languages, meaning 'the spaciousness behind all form'. Although the word refers to the fundamental ground of everyday reality, as part of the name of our centre it also expresses that we are open to people of any faith and to all the traditions in Buddhism. We have weekly Wednesday night meditations, offer our own retreats, and offer occasional opportunities for personal retreats when no retreat is scheduled. Our resident teachers are also available for talks to groups or public events.
